AAdvantage® credit card terms

Updated March 1, 2024

The following terms relate to your AAdvantage® credit card and your participation in the AAdvantage® program:

  1. Primary AAdvantage® credit cardmembers should refer to their AAdvantage® card agreement to understand their obligations to keep the account open, and understand the conditions under which their AAdvantage® credit card issuing bank may close the account, including inactivity.
  2. Primary AAdvantage® credit cardmembers will not be subject to the 24-Month Qualifying Activity Requirement (as defined in the AAdvantage® Program Agreement). Specifically, the accrued miles in the account of a primary AAdvantage® credit cardmember will not expire even if there is no Qualifying Activity in such account in any 24-month period. For new primary AAdvantage® credit cardmembers it will take up to 24 hours after the bank’s approval until their accounts reflect that no expiration date applies to their miles. This timing may differ for AAdvantage® credit cards issued outside the U.S.
  3. However, upon closure of their AAdvantage® credit card account, AAdvantage® members will be subject to the 24-Month Qualifying Activity Requirement and must have mileage earning or redeeming activity within 4 months of closure or within 24 months of the last Qualifying Activity date, whichever is later, in order to retain their miles and their expiration date will be determined by the later date of these two events, as applicable.
  4. The AAdvantage® status qualification year begins on March 1 and runs through the last day of February of the following calendar year. All Loyalty Points earned from AAdvantage® credit card transactions that have posted to your AAdvantage® credit card account with a transaction date from March 1st through the last day of February will count toward the status qualification year, regardless of your credit card’s February statement closing date. For AAdvantage® credit cards issued outside of the U.S., Loyalty Point earn will continue to count based on the date on which the activity posts to the primary cardmember’s AAdvantage® account.
  5. 1 Loyalty Point accrues for every eligible AAdvantage® mile earned on purchases, excluding balance transfers, cash advances, checks that access your AAdvantage® credit card account, items and services returned for credit, unauthorized charges, interest and account fees, traveler’s checks, purchases of foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers (and similar cash-like transactions), lottery tickets, and gaming chips (and similar betting transactions). Eligible AAdvantage® miles include the base miles earned on purchases, and do not include any bonus miles or accelerators. Loyalty Points may be earned on miles on purchases made by primary credit cardmembers and authorized users. Loyalty Points earned from eligible transactions made with an eligible AAdvantage® credit card will be posted to the applicable AAdvantage® account in 8 to 10 weeks. Timing of postings varies by bank.
  6. Additional terms and conditions specific to your AAdvantage® credit card and your participation in the AAdvantage® program may apply.
